First things first, the title – “Kaypo.” I got the word from the device you put across the fretboard of a guitar to change its pitch. This is spelled “capo.” I know this. But look at it – the word – aesthetically, KAYPO just looks better. And I’m a writer, writers can do what they want. If Shakespeare never made up new words we wouldn’t have words like “lonely” and “exciting.” Now we’ve got “Kaypo” – you’re welcome.
I’m writing this to help people, and myself. You are on a purely positive page (alliteration!) I want to help people find good new music and I want to make sure I spend more time thinking, listening and writing than I do watching TV.
I remember being a kid and sitting next to the radio with my finger on the pause button of a cassette ready to record the songs off the 680 CFTR top 6 at 6. I’d love the hell out of some songs and positively hate others. At any given time I’d have a new favourite song that I’d announce as such to anyone who’d listen.
I got older. The top 6 at 6 started to seem a little repetitive. I’d take trips to downtown Toronto, get off when I saw the puke green tiles of Dundas station and buy 45s at the back of “Sam the Record Man” on Yonge Street. “You are the sun, you are the rain” by Lionel Richie was an all time favourite. Then later I moved on to buying used records at “Vortex” just up the street from Massey Hall.
What I was doing then and what I’m doing now, though after a hell of a lot of evolution and refinement in taste, is not different – I’m looking for my next favourite song. Most people stop looking as they get older, but I still find it the most exciting thing in the world.
A close second to finding and listening to exciting new music myself is giving it to other people. Anyone who knows me more than likely has a couple of mixed CDs (tapes if I’ve known you longer) that I’ve compiled for them. I want to share my excitement.
Kaypo-dot-cee-ay is just the most recent step in this; a way to share with an even larger group of people the gold nuggets of great music I’ve found after sifting through the sands of mediocrity in the music world. I hope you like it.
Sean
